In the world of water sports, whitewater rafting is on a whole other level—harder, faster, and more dangerous than your everyday canoeing and kayaking. And our state has plenty of rivers and reservoirs where you can enjoy a quiet day of sailing, floating on the water.
But there’s only one place in Indiana where you can go flying down real, high-speed river rapids.
Up in South Bend, the East Race Waterway is the first man-made whitewater course in the country—and the only rafting course available in the Midwest. This 2,000-foot stretch of the St. Joseph River generates waves over six feet tall, rivaling the rapids of the Colorado River and guaranteed to get you soaked.
If you’re new to whitewater rafting, this is a great place to dip your toes in the water and practice your skills in a more controlled environment—with expert staff and lifeguards there to help you along the way.
